Release Notes for Xslimmer 1.6
Description
Xslimmer 1.6 improves history management to keep track of backups even if you move them to a new location from outside Xslimmer. The authentication process has also been improved: when admin credentials are required, they will be requested once at the beginning of the slim process, instead of multiple times as apps that require admin privileges are encountered. Many other bugs have been fixed. The improved workflow and reliability make Xslimmer 1.6 a recommended upgrade for all users.
Feature improvements
- Backup and history management. Backup locations are now tracked using Finder aliases. This means that you can archive your backups to an external volume, or move them around in your disk as you please without losing Xslimmer's ability to find them and restore your apps. Your existing History data will be quickly upgraded to the new format the first time you run Xslimmer 1.6: this way, the backups you already have will be supported too. Note, however, that tracking occurs after the conversion has taken place, so Xslimmer might not be able to locate backups you have already moved around.
Thanks Chris Hanson for BDAlias, which is being used to support this feature! - Authentication process. Previous versions of Xslimmer requested admin credentials when apps that needed them were found. If only a handful of the apps to be slimmed required authorization, this could result in your password being requested multiple times, due to authorization expiration time being hit. In addition, the password was requested midway through the process, thus possibly interrupting your work outside Xslimmer. A new authorization system has been implemented: your credentials, if needed, will be requested as soon as you hit the "Slim" button, and they will be cached all throughout the process. Of course, if you decide not to grant admin permissions, only those apps that can be modified by your user account will be modified, and no more questions will be asked.
Bug fixes
- File ownership/mode not accurately preserved in rare occasions. Xslimmer 1.5.3 would sometimes not correctly preserve all metadata information of slimmed files. This was an infrequent problem; in addition, most times it had no impact on the slimmed app. A few apps, however, were reported for blacklist inclusion due to this bug, when in fact they should not need to be blacklisted. Thanks a lot to Thomas Clement, the author of TimeMachineEditor, for alerting us about this issue!
- Potential crash fixed. A rare crasher that could happen on a disk error condition has been prevented.
- Other minor bugs solved.
